Dog and Cat
fun • complex • absurd
Overview
I made these collages for my own enjoyment and as a test for myself. These were my first full-size poster collages, and I have since done several large collages in their wake. There aren’t many differences between cat and dog people, yet they argue with each other. This “rivalry” has always interested me and inspired me to make these pieces. I also figured the prints would sell because most people align themselves with one side and then run with it.
Process
I have a great deal of magazines and national geographics, but I only used my “ad magazines” for this project. I went through a stack of about 50 magazines and cut out every dog and cat I saw. Then, I trimmed the clippings and split the cats and dogs up. I then sorted the dogs by size and began laying them out. I carefully layered the pieces and didn’t use glue till I was truly sure of the placement. I did the same for the cats, but I had to visit a thrift store for a cat book to finish the poster when I had dogs left over from the dog poster.
